Castle Tioram

The ruins of Castle Tioram perch on the rocky summit of a tidal island and can be easily reached when the tide has receded. This is the ancient seat of the MacDonalds of Clan Ranald.

The castle was set alight by its last occupant, Allan Dearg MacDonald when he went off to support the Jacobite Rising of 1715. He set it on fire rather than risk the castle being taken over by the Campbells of Argyll if he failed to return from battle. The castle was used during filming of Highlander III and Rob Roy.
